Counsyl Appoints Chief Financial Officer And General Counsel

The company welcomes industry veterans, Joel Jung and Peter Soparkar, to support growth in its DNA testing business

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Counsyl, a DNA testing and genetic counseling service, today announced two strategic appointments to its executive leadership team:

Joel Jung joins Counsyl with nearly 20 years of experience as an executive in the life sciences industry. Most recently, Joel was the Chief Financial Officer of BioNano Genomics, a privately held company that is developing a new genomic mapping platform. Prior to BioNano, Joel was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of AgraQuest, a privately held biotechnology company, where he played an integral role in the company’s acquisition by Bayer in 2012. Before AgraQuest, Joel was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for the Celera Corporation where he led the financial team in the spinout from the Applera Corporation, listing the company as an independent, publicly traded company. Joel’s experience also includes working at Chiron Corporation for 11 years in several executive financial positions. He began his finance career at Bank of America. Joel earned an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business and a B.S. from Purdue University.

Peter Soparkar joins Counsyl from Jazz Pharmaceuticals, where he led the legal team’s operations support and delivered on numerous debt and equity financings and four landmark transactions, including the launched tender-offer of Celator, the acquisitions of Italy-based Gentium, UK based EUSA Pharma, and the acquisition of and inversion into Ireland based Azur Pharma. Prior to Jazz, Peter worked at Latham & Watkins in London and San Francisco, with a practice spanning international and domestic markets, as well as private and public transactions. His deep life-sciences legal experience includes support for development activities, corporate governance, legal and regulatory compliance, public companies and compliant commercial activities. He received a J.D. from New York University and a B.A. from Oberlin College.
