PASADENA, Calif., March 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation (ICHMSI) announced today that applications are now being accepted for the Ruth A. Lawrence Investigator Award for Research in Human Milk Science. The award was created to encourage original research in the areas of human milk science and breastfeeding medicine, and to support the advancement of emerging researchers in this vital area of science. Entries are due by June 15, 2018. Established by the ICHMSI in 2016 in honor of Dr. Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., a pioneer in the field of human lactation and breast milk, the award will be presented at the 6th Annual ICHMSI to be held Sept. 5-7, 2018, in Pasadena, Calif. The winner will receive $10,000 to support future research, travel expenses and an invitation to present his or her research at the conference. Last year, Dr. Adam Lewandowski received the first Ruth A. Lawrence Investigator Award for Research in Human Milk Science, and was one of 12 award applicants whose applications were reviewed and scored by an independent panel of expert judges. Lewandowski, a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Research Fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, UK, was selected for his research, titled: "Breast Milk Consumption in Preterm Neonates and Cardiac Shape in Adulthood." Award applicants must be trainees (students, post-graduate trainees/residents/fellows) or physician/academic researchers who are within the first five years of completion of their postgraduate training. Nurses involved in research, who received a master of science in nursing or doctor of nursing science degree within the last five years, may also qualify.
