Zimmer Selects MTS For Orthopaedic Device Test Systems

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MTS Systems Corporation today announced it received an order for test equipment totaling $390,000 from Swiss orthopaedic device manufacturer Zimmer GmbH. Adding to Zimmer’s existing array of MTS test equipment, the order includes MTS servohydraulic load frames and accompanying digital servocontrollers, which will be deployed by Zimmer to advance development and meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) registration requirements for a variety of orthopaedic hip, knee and spine devices.

“MTS develops high-performance test and simulation solutions to help bring increasingly complex orthopaedic devices to market rapidly with high levels of confidence,” said Sidney W. Emery, Jr., MTS chairman and CEO. “The continued selection of MTS by a market leader such as Zimmer validates our technology and global support strategy.”

The Zimmer order will be deployed in two installments. The first included four Mini Bionix(R) load frames and two FlexTest(TM) GT digital servocontrollers that were installed in June 2005 to replace several older, non-MTS test systems. The second installment, scheduled for deployment in September 2005, will expand Zimmer’s overall testing capabilities with two Mini Bionix load frames and a single FlexTest GT digital servocontroller.

“Expanding our array of MTS equipment allows us to conduct the bulk of our testing on a single controller and software platform, simplifying and streamlining our testing activities, and ultimately enhancing the reliability of test results,” said Daniel Schmuki, Head of Testing Lab at Zimmer. “Given the demonstrated quality and reliability of MTS’ solutions, and the strong, local support we’ve enjoyed from them in the past, we fully expect this platform will prove robust and viable for years to come.”
