AKRON, Ohio, July 8 /PRNewswire/ - For the eighth time in as many years, Summa Health System has been recognized as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report. This year, Summa earned the most rankings and is the longest ranking hospital on the U.S. News & World Report list among Akron- Canton area hospitals.
In this year’s rankings, which appear in the July 18 issue of the magazine, Summa is recognized in three separate specialties and is the only Akron-Canton hospital ranked in Orthopaedics. In addition, Orthopaedics was the first Summa specialty to be recognized by the magazine and the system’s longest-ranked service.
Of more than 6,007 hospitals across the United States, only 176 of the nation’s top medical centers were recognized by U.S. News. Only those placing within the top 50 in each category earn a ranking.
Summa earned the following “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings: - 28th in Respiratory Disorders - 49th in Orthopaedics - 48th in Digestive Disorders
According to U.S. News & World Report, “America’s Best Hospitals” tend to adhere more closely to advanced treatment guidelines, to incorporate new findings into patient care and to conduct research that gives desperately ill patients more options. This year, the publication’s standards required hospitals to perform a significant number of defined procedures and to have impeccable reputation, mortality rates, nursing and patient services. Ranked hospitals also had to meet other standards, such as membership in the Council of Teaching Hospitals, an affiliation with a medical school or availability of technology-related services.
Tom Strauss, president and CEO of Summa Health System, said the rankings demonstrate not only Summa’s quality of care, but its dedication to the community.
“We are proud of our continued recognition by U.S. News & World Report,” Strauss said. “These rankings illustrate our commitments to the community we serve -- commitments to provide the highest quality care, to show compassion to our patients, to invest in technology and to be the healthcare resource Akron can always depend on.”
The U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Hospitals” July 18 issue will be on newsstands beginning July 11. For more information about the rankings, visit Summa’s Web site at www.summahealth.org or log on to www.usnews.com.
