R. David Hoover Elected to Eli Lilly and Company Board of Directors

INDIANAPOLIS, June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Board of Directors of Eli Lilly and Company has elected R. David Hoover as a new member, effective June 1, 2009. Mr. Hoover, 63, is the chairman, president and chief executive officer of Ball Corporation, a provider of metal and plastic packaging for beverages, foods and household products, and of aerospace and other technologies and services to commercial and governmental customers. As a member of Lilly's board, Mr. Hoover will serve on both the audit and compensation committees. He will serve under interim election and will stand for election by Lilly shareholders at the company's annual meeting in 2010.

Mr. Hoover has been the chairman, president and chief executive officer of Ball Corporation since April 2002 and has been president and CEO since January 2001. Mr. Hoover joined Ball Corporation in 1970. During his career, he has served as vice president, Finance and Administration, of both the company's agricultural systems division and the company's aerospace systems group. He was elected vice president and treasurer in 1988 and senior vice president and chief financial officer in 1992. He was named executive vice president and elected to the company's board of directors in 1996. In 1998 he was elected vice chairman, in addition to the role of chief financial officer. Mr. Hoover became president of Ball Corporation on January 2000, and was named chief operating officer in April 2000.

Mr. Hoover is a member of the boards of Energizer Holdings, Inc., Qwest Communications International Inc. and Irwin Financial Corporation. He is a member of the board of the National Association of Manufacturers and is a member and past chair of the board of governors of the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI). Mr. Hoover is chair of the board of trustees of DePauw University and on the Indiana University Kelley School of Business Dean's Council. He is also a director of Boulder Community Hospital and a member of the Colorado Forum.
