US scientists are presently growing a large number of inner ear sensory hair cells from mouse stem cells, which they believe will ultimately lead the way to cure hearing loss and balance problems in humans. The two scientists Corwin, a neuroscience professor from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and Heller, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, are finding out ways to develop new methods to expand and maintain adult stem cells isolated from the inner ear to establish long-term stable cell lines.
