Time Warner Telecom Delivers Comprehensive Voice And Data Services For Kettering Medical Center Network

DAYTON, Ohio, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Time Warner Telecom , a leading provider of managed voice and data networking solutions for businesses in Ohio and 22 other states, today announced it has been awarded a multi-year contract to deliver comprehensive communications services to Kettering Medical Center Network. KMCN provides health care across six counties in Dayton and southwest Ohio and requires 24 x 7 network availability to patient care applications and data.

The health care provider contracted Time Warner Telecom to provide its metro Ethernet and switched native LAN service between 52 in-network facilities and local and long distance voice services. Service is expected to be installed by September of this year.

"Providing health care to our patients requires around-the-clock access to applications and data, so our number one communications criterion was the availability of our network," said Dan Townsend, technical integration manager for Kettering Medical Center Network in Dayton. "Time Warner Telecom provides Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology which will take our network availability to the next level."

The RPR SONET ring provides Kettering with any-to-any connectivity to deliver improved redundancy among the Network's four hospitals, as well as a disaster recovery site. The RPR ring will enable the implementation of cost-effective business-class VoIP technology for an estimated 30 facilities.

Additionally, eleven-100 Mbps Switched Native LAN (SNLAN) circuits will be used primarily to transport patient image files administered by a picture archiving communications system (PACS) application. These 100 Mbps circuits will link Kettering's medium-sized health care centers with any-to-any data connectivity. Smaller facilities will draw upon seventeen 10 Mbps SNLAN pipes to access centralized registration, billing and patient record data and applications.

Time Warner Telecom also provides local and long distance voice service to the majority of Kettering's 52 sites for a comprehensive voice and data communications package.

The implementation was made easier by the interoperability of Time Warner Telecom services with Kettering's installed Cisco gear. "They were a good fit because their network infrastructure connects seamlessly with the Cisco devices we have in place," added Townsend. "We liked the fact that Time Warner Telecom could meet both our voice and data needs quickly and with little difficulty."

"High-capacity and any-to-any connectivity are fast becoming a standard among leading health care networks in Ohio," said Tim Raffel, vice president and general manager for Time Warner Telecom in Dayton and Cincinnati. "Health care providers are drawing on ever-more sophisticated applications and technologies to improve patient outcomes and all that adds up to a need for lots of capacity delivered within a highly available network. Our RPR ring technology and Native LAN service were designed to meet that stringent requirement."

Time Warner Telecom's metro Ethernet Native LAN uses Cisco equipment and has been designated a Cisco Powered Network service, signifying that this service is built around Cisco's industry leading technology.
