American Diabetes Association Welcomes Newest Volunteer Leaders to 2009 Board of Directors

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - January 05, 2009) - The American Diabetes Association, the nation’s largest and leading voluntary health organization in the fight against diabetes, is pleased to announce the newest members elected to the Association’s Board of Directors.

Individuals representing the Association’s Officers of the 2009 Board include:

George J. Huntley, CPA, Chair of the Board. Huntley is also Chief Financial Officer for Theoris Group, Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has been living with type 1 diabetes for more than 25 years and has been a dedicated American Diabetes Association volunteer leader for more than 20 years.

R. Paul Robertson, MD, President, Medicine & Science. Dr. Robertson is also President and Scientific Director of the Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute, and Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Washington. Robertson has been an active volunteer leader within the Association since 1984.

Susan McLaughlin, BS, RD, CDE, CPT, President, Health Care & Education. McLaughlin also works with adult and pediatric endocrine patients at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. McLaughlin has been an enthusiastic volunteer leader within the Association since 1984.

T. Edwin Stinson, Jr., Secretary/Treasurer. Prior to retiring from banking in 2008, Stinson served as the President and CEO of Cygnet Private Bank, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Stinson has been a dedicated Association volunteer leader for more than 14 years.

Nash M. Childs, PE, Chair of the Board-Elect. Childs is also Executive Vice President of Bancroft Construction Company in Wilmington, Delaware. Childs has been an active Association volunteer for more than 20 years.

Richard M. Bergenstal, MD, President-Elect, Medicine & Science. Dr. Bergenstal is also Executive Director of the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Clinical Professor for the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

Christine T. Tobin, RN, MBA, CDE, President-Elect, Health Care & Education. Tobin has been a diabetes educator for 26 years in a variety of clinical settings. Tobin has been an active Association volunteer for 25 years.

Gerard B. Nee, CPA, Secretary/Treasurer-Elect. Nee is also a partner at Wagner, Morey & Nee, LLC in New Jersey. Nee has been a volunteer with the Association for more than 17 years.

John W. Griffin, Jr., Vice Chair of the Board. Griffin is also Managing Partner of Marek, Griffin & Knaupp, a Victoria, Texas law firm. A recipient of the Association’s 2006 Addison B. Scoville Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, he has served on numerous Association committees and task forces.

Robert R. Henry, MD, Vice President, Medicine & Science. Dr. Henry is also Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of California, San Diego and Chief of the Section on Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Elizabeth J. Mayer-Davis, MSPH, PhD, RD, Vice President, Health Care & Education. Dr. Mayer-Davis is also Professor, Department of Nutrition, Gillings School of Global Public Health & School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Mayer-Davis has been a volunteer with the Association for more than 20 years.

Dwight Holing, Vice Secretary/Treasurer. Holing is also founder and principal of DHA Communications, a multimedia communications firm that provides public relations and public affairs services to business, government, and nonprofit clients. He has served on a variety of Association national committees and task forces.

In addition, the following people have been elected to the Association’s Board of Directors for a three-year term:

Lurelean B. Gaines, RN, MSN, is Chair, Department of Nursing, East Los Angeles College. She is currently serving the American Diabetes Association on a national level as Chair of the Latino Initiatives Subcommittee and is a member of the Community Initiatives Committee.

Dennis F. Marco is Executive Vice President, Porzio Governmental Affairs, LLC in Trenton, New Jersey. He has served the American Diabetes Association in northern New Jersey as Co-Chair of the Address to the Business Community program and was an honoree at the 2008 Rainbow Gala.

David G. Marrero, PhD is J.O. Ritchey Professor of Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Director, Diabetes Translational Research Center, Indiana University School of Medicine. He has been an American Diabetes Association member since 1985.

Louis H. Philipson, MD, PhD is Director of the Kovler Diabetes Center and Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at the University of Chicago where he has been on the faculty since 1988.

Thomas L. Ryan, CPA, is Chief Executive Officer, Service Corporation International (SCI), in Houston, Texas. Prior to SCI, he was a certified public accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, LLP.

Patrick L. Shuler, CPA, is a Senior Partner at Goodman & Company, LLP, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He has served the Association on a variety of national and community level committees.
