LAFAYETTE, La., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer patients in South Louisiana will now have access to one of the most advanced cancer treatment systems in the world. OncoLogics, Inc. is bringing the TomoTherapy Hi-Art System(TM) to Lafayette and will begin using this treatment on patients by the end of July 2006. OncoLogics, Inc. is one of only 50 facilities in the United States and 60 in the world to offer this new treatment.
The TomoTherapy System pinpoints the precise location of the tumor and delivers radiation from 360 degrees, unlike traditional radiation treatment devices, which deliver treatment to the tumor from only a few different directions. This allows more precise radiation delivery with lower doses to normal, healthy tissue.

The TomoTherapy System is one of the first treatment devices to provide imaging immediately before each radiation treatment. Patients are moved through the machine for a localizing 3-D computerized tomography image to verify the shape, size and location of the tumor and then radiation is delivered in a helical pattern. Each treatment takes between 15 and 25 minutes.
“This system will allow us to deliver treatment that is more localized and certainly more accurate. It is not uncommon for tumors to move or change shape between treatments, so confirming the exact location of the tumor before each treatment allows us to be more precise in our delivery of the radiation,” said Dr. DeLand.
