Melbourn Scientific is marking twenty years at the forefront of analytical and formulation support with the announcement at DDL20 (Drug Delivery to the Lungs) of two new services based on leading-edge technology.
Melbourn Scientific is the first contract research organisation to offer Terahertz Pulsed Imaging (TPI), which offers unique insights into drug presentations, and Malvern’s Morphologi G3 for improved particle characterisation.
TeraView’s TPI technology offers potential for the accurate monitoring of batch variability in, Lactose Anhydrous NF, for example, which has recently been shown to impact on the performance of dry powder inhalers.
Mark Hammond, CEO of Melbourn Scientific, believes that the company’s new analytical services will provide quality control benefits leading to enhanced performance in drug delivery.

TeraView TPI is proving to offer some unique insights and by offering it within our portfolio of analytical services drug and device developers will have access to this powerful technology.”
Melbourn Scientific has also been evaluating the use of Malvern’s award winning Morphologi G3 image analysis system in pre-formulation studies, and has found that it offers potential to automate particle classification making this part of the process significantly faster.
Derek Solomon Laboratory Manager at Melbourn Scientific comments, “Traditionally, we use light microscopy for sub visible particle characterisation which is done by experienced analysts recording the visual characteristics observed. With Morphologi G3 the shape parameters are accurately recorded automatically to provide a ‘fingerprint’ of each sample, removing the subjectivity and increasing throughput.”
