MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Luminetx Corp. today announced it has formed a Clinical Operations division at the company led by David Pennington.
The group, known as Clinical Ops for short, provides ongoing clinical support and research-based information to Luminetx sales and marketing team members, as well as directly to the client base, as they market the leading-edge VeinViewer technology across the globe. Pennington, who spent several years as a critical care nurse and organ transplant coordinator, has been in clinical support and marketing roles in the last several years with other health care companies, including Venetec International and Cardiva Medical, Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Science in biology, a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a master’s degree in business administration.
“Our division exists to provide a strong clinical backbone for the rest of our company,” Pennington said. “We not only support our sales representatives out in the field, but we are also here to communicate the efficacy of our products in the clinical realm so that prospects and current clients can understand the real benefit to them and to the patients they serve.”
The VeinViewer, Luminetx’s signature product, is a vascular imaging system that allows physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to clearly see accessible vasculature (or lack thereof) in real time. The device uses a combination of near-infrared light and patented technologies to image vascular structures and projects their location directly on the surface of the skin. This provides clinicians with a safe, non-invasive adjunct technology for clinical treatments and procedures including, but not limited to: IV insertions, PICC line insertions, routine venipuncture (blood sampling), blood and plasma donations and treatment for varicose and spider veins.

As one of its first projects, Clinical Ops has launched a new course – Avoidable Complications of Accidental Needlestick Injuries - that will offer health care professionals continuing education (CE) credit and help them become super-users within facilities that utilize the VeinViewer technology. Additionally, Clinical Operations has developed a cooperative relationship with the International Sharps Injury Prevention Society (ISIPS) and is listed on the ISIPS Web site under the vascular visualization category of safety products.
“When we as health care practitioners talk in altruistic terms of patient satisfaction and nursing confidence, the benefits of the VeinViewer are difficult to quantify,” Pennington said. “However, the overall economic benefit to hospitals and clinics with regard to decreased time, lower material costs and a substantial reduction in the number of needles needed for venous access is very real and very quantifiable.”
