Pennsylvania Health Department Receives $250,000 Grant To Implement New Comprehensive Cancer Plan For Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Secretary Dr. Calvin B. Johnson today announced that the Department of Health received a $247,843 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assist in the implementation of the first comprehensive plan to reduce cancer in Pennsylvania.

“This grant is significant to all Pennsylvanians since cancer affects so many families,” said Dr. Johnson. “The continuing epidemic of cancer within the United States calls for a renewed and more vigorous course of action toward prevention and control. By implementing this plan through collaboration with statewide partners, we will make a significant impact in Pennsylvania and ensure meaningful progress toward a future of increased cancer control.”

The Pennsylvania Cancer Control Consortium (PAC3) developed the five-year plan to address cancer. Immediate plans are to address 11 areas that emerged as priorities by forming four cancer continuum teams to implement the plan. The continuum teams include:

-- Prevention/Healthy Lifestyle -- Screening/Early Detection -- Treatment/Care Delivery -- Quality of Life/Survivorship

The CDC grant provides partial funding to maintain daily operations of the PAC3 Coordinating Office located at the University of Pittsburgh. In May 2004, PAC3 designated new leadership with the appointment of a board of directors to oversee and monitor the functions and progress of the implementation process.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Pennsylvania. Each day, 206 new cases of cancer are diagnosed and 80 cancer deaths occur.
