Optos North America Launches Eyecare Web Site

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Ophthalmic device company Optos North America today announced the launch of its newly re-designed and expanded Web site. The Optos Web site address will remain the same which is http://www.optos.com/. Optos manufactures the Optomap(R) Retinal Exam, which allows optometrists and ophthalmologists to capture an unprecedented image of up to 200 degrees of the back of the eyes (the retina), with low powered lasers without dilation.

The Optos Web site will include a new area intended for a patient/consumer audience that provides eye-related information including: the importance of getting an annual eye exam; eye anatomy; children’s eye health; conditions of the retina; background on the Optomap Retinal Exam; patient testimonials; an area where consumers can search for an eyecare professional in their area using the Optomap; and more. The Optos Web site also includes an area intended for eye care providers that provides information including: details on the Optomap Retinal Exam; a disease library of images taken with the Optomap; professional testimonials; educational initiatives/events; and more. Other areas of the site include an area that provides background information on Optos, an area for members of the media to access relevant company information, press releases and other materials, and a secure area for Optos Partners using the Optomap.

“The Optos Web site provides a wealth of information on eyecare related issues including the importance of having an annual eye exam,” said William Jones, O.D., F.A.A.O. “It is crucial for the entire family to have annual eye exams to check for eye damage or signs of disease, many of which, if detected early, may be treated successfully without vision loss. The Optos Web site Patient area is very informative, patient-friendly, and easy to navigate.”

To date almost 2 million patients have benefited from the Optomap Retinal Exam, many of which resulted in the early detection of conditions, which could have led to vision loss. The Optomap image is displayed immediately after being taken, allowing the eye care professional to review it quickly and if necessary, refer the patient to a retinal specialist. Using the Internet, the image can be sent anywhere in the world for a specialist to review. Each Optomap image is as individual as fingerprints or DNA and can provide eye care professionals with a unique view of the patient’s health very quickly and comfortably. The Optomap provides a much larger view of the retina than conventional eye equipment, and is rapidly being placed in ophthalmic practices throughout the world as eyecare professionals and patients realize its tremendous benefits.

Optos’ product, the Optomap Retinal Exam, is the brainchild of Douglas Anderson, founder and vice chairman, Optos, whose son lost the sight of an eye at the age of five, due to an undetected retinal tear. Anderson and his team then developed a system using low powered red and green lasers to scan the retina in just a quarter of a second. Regular monitoring of the retina can help in the early detection of many conditions including retinal tears, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy - a serious complication of diabetes that is one of the leading causes of blindness amongst diabetics.

Optos North America, the wholly owned subsidiary of Optos plc, is headquartered in Marlborough, MA. Optos plc and the company’s development center are located in Dunfermline, Scotland. For more information, visit the Optos website at http://www.optos.com/.
