CIBER Develops Cancer Screening Database For Maryland Public Health Programs; Tracks Data For Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening And Treatment Program

HARRISBURG, Pa., May 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CIBER, Inc. today announced it has developed, in conjunction with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, a cancer client database for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The database captures clinical information on clients enrolled in local health department programs funded by the Cigarette Restitution Fund (CRF) program and is being used to measure the results of the state’s Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment (CPEST) program.

The database is used by 24 Maryland Local Health Departments and two statewide academic health centers to track client enrollment, screening, diagnosis and treatment.

“Given the critical nature of the data collected by the CPEST database, we needed a partner with both an in-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry and screening and treatment. CIBER clearly demonstrated expertise in both areas,” said Dr. Eileen Steinberger, Project Director at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. “The new database provides the DHMH with a powerful tool to measure and evaluate the results of the CPEST program.”

“We needed an application that would allow our local users to enroll clients, manage clients’ care, perform recall and billing and generate letters to the clients and doctors,” said Dr. Diane Dwyer, Medical Director of the DHMH Center for Cancer Surveillance and Control. “The application also needed to allow our central office to have access to the same data in real time for reports and for program accountability and evaluation. This application meets all of those needs.”

The database tracks core client information, such as history, symptoms, screening, diagnosis and treatment information, for four types of cancer (colorectal, prostate, oral and skin) and has been designed to easily accommodate additional modules for other cancer types. Information will be collected from over 28 sites using secure Intranet-based data entry and stored in a Microsoft SQL server. The data can be queried for in-depth analysis and for routine reporting purposes using standard reports or customized user- defined reports.

“By creating a web-based application with robust data entry validation, the DHMH and the University of Maryland, Baltimore are increasing data quality and simplifying entry, accessibility, management and utilization of key data associated with the CPEST program,” said Ann Griffiths, CIBER’s Vice President and Area Director. “This demonstrates the value that a well-designed application can have in terms of efficiency, productivity, and accuracy.”

CIBER’s Application Development practice focuses on building new applications, extending existing applications and implementing market-leading software packages quickly and with high quality. Services include custom development, legacy modernization, managed content services, mobility and wireless.
