SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Samplify Systems, Inc., a next generation mixed-signal semiconductor company, today launches Prism 3.0, the company’s newest real-time signal compression algorithm for implementation on popular FPGA platforms and its award winning intelligent data converters. Prism 3.0 was developed to help solve transmission issues faced by high-data bandwidth signal processing applications, with numerous enhancements for wireless base station, computed tomography (CT), and medical ultrasound applications.
Reduced Complexity and Latency
In most applications the value of compression is maximized the closer compression is to the analog domain and decompression is to the software domain. Among the enhancements in Prism 3.0 is a significant reduction in decompression complexity without sacrificing compression ratios. The Prism 3.0 decompression engine uses nearly half the FPGA logic resources than its predecessor. In addition, the encoding format has been optimized for software decoding, resulting in a 200 percent improvement in decompression performance on x86-based CPUs or graphics processing units (GPU). For example, a trend in medical imaging applications is to move more and more of the signal processing into the software domain. Yet in these systems, the speed of data acquisition hardware has outstripped the capacity of backplane technologies. With 3x the decompression performance on the back-end processor, Prism 3.0 eliminates these backplane bottlenecks between the data acquisition hardware and the software processing domain.
New SignalTrak Mode Maintains Signal Quality for Bursty Signals
Prism 3.0, introduces a new compression mode, SignalTrak, which maintains signal quality for bursty signals with wide dynamic ranges. SignalTrak is designed for ultrasound, SONAR, and RADAR applications where the bursts contain both strong and weak reflections over very short intervals, 100 microns. Traditional feedback gain control techniques adapt the signal level too slowly to reduce dynamic range without losing signal quality for weak signals, or risking overload for strong signals. SignalTrak eschews these feedback techniques to provide optimum signal quality over a block-size of as few as four samples.
Pricing and Availability
Samplify Prism 3.0 is available now in netlist format for Xilinx and Altera FPGAs from Samplify and its channel partners. Pricing starts at $25,000 for a development license, plus royalties which are application dependent. Samplify Prism 3.0 for FPGA is available as a no cost upgrade for customers of Samplify’s SAM1600 family of intelligent analog-to-digital converters.
