BANGALORE, India—DIA will host the 8th Annual Conference on The New Clinical Research Environment in India: Implications and Opportunities Oct. 24 to 26 at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences’ convention center in Bangalore. This three-day conference will provide a forum for academia, industry representatives, regulators and researchers to come together to discuss the new environment for health care product development in India.
“New regulations have made the pursuit of clinical development in India extremely challenging, while the demand for services in the regulation-free domains of remote data processing and IT-enabled offerings is growing at an unprecedented scale,” said Kaushik Desai, DIA director for India. “Participants will hear about how their peers are coping with new regulations and how they are planning to realize the promise of emerging opportunities.”
Ranjit Roy Chaudhury, Ph.D., chairman of the task force for research at the Apollo Hospitals Educational and Research Foundation, and Mukhtar Ahmed, vice president of product strategy for Oracle’s Health Sciences Global Business Unit, will serve as keynote speakers. The first session, “Vaccine Development – A Challenge Like No Other,” will address the imperatives for India in vaccine development and identify the risks and benefits to patients participating in vaccine trials. Workshop sessions will include:
- Session 1B: Global Development of Biosimilars, Oct. 25, 9:30 a.m.: India has emerged as a hotbed for the development of biosimilars. Speakers in this session will review the progress made by Indian companies in pursuing the biosimilars opportunity, and the lessons learned from studying how other agencies have dealt with biosimilars development proposals. Andrew Rankin, Ph.D., vice president of biopharmaceuticals at Prescient Healthcare Group, will be speaking on the global view of biosimilar development strategy.
- Session 2C: IT in Clinical Records and Collaboration, Oct. 25, 11:30 a.m.: This session will highlight how new technological developments are taking clinical drug development beyond today’s horizon. Sudeep Pattnaik, vice president and head of project management and delivery at Quintiles, will present information regarding the big data in drug development as it relates to the session topic.
- Session 5AB: Compensation for Injuries to Participants in Research: A Trans-National Perspective, Oct. 26, 9:30 a.m.: There has been much debate in India and internationally about appropriate standards for compensation given to patients for injuries incurred during clinical trials. This session will seek to advance the discussions regarding the topic within India. Mark Barnes, partner at Ropes & Gray, USA, will chair the session.
- Session 7C: SMAC (Social Media, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud) or New Technologies, Oct. 26, 2 p.m.: There are many new technologies in the pharmaceutical industry, including social media, mobility, analytics and cloud (SMAC). Industry and technology thought leaders will discuss the value of new technology and approaches to adopting it. Dinesh Chindarkar, co-founder and vice president of operations at MediaMedic Communications, will discuss use of social media and analytics in the pharmaceutical industry.
