Farmington, Conn. — Two Connecticut residents have joined The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine and are scheduled to start work July 23. Nicholas Trafford of West Hartford will be the network engineer for the Laboratory’s new genomics research institute in Farmington, Conn. Tammy Brink of Glastonbury will serve as the administrative assistant to the recently named site director, Yu-Hui Rogers.
As the network engineer, Trafford will be responsible for a broad range of computer operations, including adapting existing capabilities at the Laboratory’s temporary facilities, helping to design and implement new systems for the permanent facility, and ensuring connectivity and interoperability with systems at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
Prior to joining JAX Genomic Medicine, Trafford worked as a network engineer for ACS, a Xerox company that provides information technology services to government, education, healthcare and other sectors. His formal certifications include CompTIA A+, CompTIA Security+ and certification as a Microsoft Certified Professional. He currently is pursuing certification as a Cisco Certified Network Associate.
Brink will provide primary administrative support as operations expand at JAX Genomic Medicine. She has worked in several corporate administrative positions, most recently with the Adams & Knight advertising agency in Avon, Conn. She also has experience in media, engineering and financial services environments. Her education includes a B.S. in animal sciences from the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
Trafford and Brink initially will work in temporary space on the campus of the UConn Health Center. Construction of a 173,000-square-foot permanent facility for JAX Genomic Medicine will begin in January 2013. The facility will bring together scientists and clinicians to study human genomics and apply new discoveries to the personalized clinical care of patients with cancer, diabetes and other genetic diseases and conditions. The facility will house 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff in advanced computing facilities and laboratories by 2020.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif., as well as the new genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Conn. It employs a total staff of more than 1,400. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human disease and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
