Recognizing The Sudden Death Of Dr. Lee Jong-Wook, Director-General Of The World Health Organization

WASHINGTON, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Randall L. Tobias, U.S. Director of Foreign Assistance and USAID Administrator:

Today, it is with great sadness to learn of the sudden death of Dr. Lee Jong-wook. As Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Lee committed his life to advancing public health, saving lives and bringing hope to those suffering from illness and disease throughout the developing world. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his compassion, humor and kindness, and his leadership and commitment to fighting infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and polio. More people in the developing world are no doubt alive today because of his leadership and insight.

Dr. Lee was a source of great personal inspiration and was a much- respected colleague and friend to many at the U.S. Agency for International Development. All of us at USAID send our condolences and deep respect to his family and to all around the world who knew him.
