Dr. Thakar, who is a Professor of Medicine with Tenure at the University of Cincinnati, OH, serves as the Director of Nephrology, Kidney C.A.R.E. Program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and is the Chief of Nephrology at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.

ACKD is a bimonthly journal of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and focuses in-depth on the care and management of persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those at risk of CKD. Each issue is dedicated to expert reviews on a single clinical topic, with a focus on emerging evidence and unmet clinical need. Clinical care issues stress the multidisciplinary team approach to the care of kidney patients. ACKD is widely read and applied in clinical practice by nephrologists (pediatric and adult), nephrology fellows (pediatric and adult), advanced practitioners, and nurses caring for patients with kidney disease.

“It is an honor to serve in this role, and further the knowledge about kidney diseases, and I am thankful to the National Kidney Foundation for this opportunity,” Dr. Thakar said. “ACKD fills a niche within the information stream, by providing its audience updates on cutting edge topics in the discipline of kidney disorders. Each issue compiles in-depth scholarly reviews of carefully selected topics relevant to the field of kidney diseases. I look forward to the opportunity to lead a top-tier team of associate editors, editorial board, and other members of the editorial team.”

Dr. Thakar will replace outgoing editor Dr. Jerry Yee in January 2020.

Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease has evolved from its inception as Advances in Renal Replacement Therapy,” Dr. Yee said. “The success of the journal during the last 10 years is attributable to the dedication, support, and excellent work of all who were involved from manuscript to production. I owe each of them much gratitude. I am confident that the journal will continue to evolve and prosper under the leadership of Dr. Thakar.”

Dr. Thakar is nationally recognized for his research related to acute kidney injury in surgical and critical care settings. His work has been published in top-tier journals in the field of nephrology and internal medicine. He has served as a guest editor of ACKD and as a member of the Program Committee of NKF’s Spring Clinical Meetings. His editorial work also includes serving as a co-editor of a textbook, Peri-Operative AKI, as well as guest editor of Anesthesiology Clinics and Cardiology Clinics.

“We at NKF are delighted to welcome Dr. Thakar as the next editor of ACKD,” said NKF Chief Scientific Officer Kerry Willis, PhD. “His background and experience make him ideally suited to expand the scope and the readership of the journal at this pivotal moment in the field of nephrology, as CKD is increasingly being recognized as a critical public health challenge. We look forward to working with him to maintain the momentum that was generated during Dr. Yee’s successful tenure.”

As an administrator, Dr. Thakar oversees a tri-partite portfolio of a large academic division. He has completed a leadership executive education program at Harvard Business School in Managing Healthcare Delivery. He has vast leadership and administrative experience in complex healthcare environments, including federal, nonprofit, and private sectors.

Kidney Disease Facts
In the United States, 37 million adults are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD) – and most aren’t aware of it. 1 in 3 American adults is at risk for CKD. Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, a family history of kidney failure, and being age 60 or older. People of African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander descent are at increased risk for developing the disease. African-Americans are about 3 times more likely than Whites to develop end-stage kidney disease (ESKD or kidney failure). Compared to non-Hispanics, Hispanics are almost 1.3 times more likely to receive a diagnosis of kidney failure.
