Medical device sales can be an exciting and fast-paced environment that that will keep your brain stimulated and your pocketbook flush. It is a career that does not always require specialized training or a college degree, depending on the device. You do need to be a people person and comfortable in a competitive sales atmosphere and well versed in the field of medical devices.
Step 1
Decide what medical devices you are interested in selling. Look up approved medical devices on the FDA websites to develop knowledge of the industry and identify potential employers. The FDA website is a treasure trove of devices, safety issues, products in the news, and research related to medical devices.
Step 2
Research the competition. Find out how many companies sell that product and what the competition offers. This information will give you an idea of what you will be up against and help you prepare for questions.
Step 3
Look directly on the device manufacturer’s website, contact the company and call or email requesting an interview. If they have no openings, ask for an informational interview to learn more about the medical device or perhaps a tour of the facility, if available. Use this chance to meet people and learn about the device.
Step 4
Research the devices a company sells and what they treat. Having this type of background information demonstrates your basic understanding of the device and area of science or medicine it is found in, which can impress your potential employers.
Step 5
Sell yourself first. Prepare a sales pitch for the medical device for the potential employer. Make sure you understand the basic science related to the device and then the beneficial uses of the medical device.
