CareFusion Corporation Launches EnVe(TM) Ventilator

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CareFusion Corporation , a new clinical and medical products corporation, today announced the launch of the EnVe(TM) ventilator - a high-performance critical care ventilator for pediatric and adult patients. Weighing only 10 pounds, the EnVe ventilator is 70-80 pounds lighter than other intensive care ventilators and offers the latest in portable and ventilation technology to help hospitals increase the quality of patient care and decrease costs.

The EnVe ventilator is unique in the marketplace due to its versatility and ability to meet the varied ventilation needs of clinicians. The modular design and reduced weight of the EnVe system allows the ventilator to easily detach and move with patients throughout the hospital, as necessary, and reduces the need for and associated costs with multiple ventilators during transport. Additionally, the device has the capability to manage non-invasive or mask-ventilated patients, allowing patients to be maintained on a single life support device throughout their hospital stay. By keeping patients on one ventilator, clinicians can better manage and care for patients by not breaking the ventilator circuit or downgrading ventilation treatment, which may help to reduce the risk of ventilator associated pneumonia and possibly other adverse events.

At the heart of the EnVe ventilator is the device’s patented ActivCore(TM) technology - the basis for its powerful, compact and portable design. The ActivCore gas delivery system features unprecedented miniaturization and blower technology to provide high-end critical care ventilation while enabling independence from wall air systems. In addition, the ActivCore technology features a hot, swappable four-hour battery for extended patient transport capabilities.

“The EnVe ventilator’s patented technology is a giant leap forward in the ventilation market,” said David Schlotterbeck, chairman and CEO of CareFusion. “Unlike previous generations of ventilators, the EnVe system allows clinicians to provide the most critically ill pediatric and adult patients with the highest level of care through a light-weight and portable ventilator system.”

Beyond critical care ventilation, the EnVe ventilator provides integrated monitoring and clinical tools to assist clinicians in best managing and caring for patients. To help move patients off of ventilators as quickly as possible, the EnVe ventilator incorporates a Spontaneous Breathing Trial (SBT) which provides data that helps clinicians to make informed decisions about weaning patients from ventilation. The device also features a pulse oximeter to monitor a patient’s pulse rate and oxygen saturation level during transport situations.

The EnVe ventilator successfully completed its first user preference evaluations in August 2009 at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas and Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and in September 2009 at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis.

“We were honored to have had Summerlin Hospital Respiratory Department as the first clinical site for the EnVe ventilator,” said Jeff Ghan, RRT, manager, Respiratory Therapy at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. “During our evaluation we found the EnVe ventilator to be extremely versatile and to provide the distinct advantage of safe patient transport throughout the hospital. The ventilator fulfills a much needed function for patient safety and ease of use.”

“The EnVe ventilator is representative of many product innovations that CareFusion is introducing to provide measurable improvements in patient care and address some of the most urgent needs in health care globally, including infection prevention and medication errors,” said Schlotterbeck.
