Bio Nano Consulting Expands into China With Contracts Signed at Tsinghua University

15 December 2010: Bio Nano Consulting (BNC), specialists in bio and nanotechnology partnerships between the academic and industrial sectors, announces the signing of two new consultancy agreements with prominent academics based at China’s Tsinghua University. Professors George Guo-Qiang Chen and Quan-Shui Zheng contribute decades of microbial and nano technological expertise.

With over twenty years R&D experience in microbial physiology, microbial production and applications, Professor Chen has developed 23 patented technologies with a further 29 patents pending. His technologies have been supplied to companies specialising in mass production of microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). To date, he has published more than 160 international review papers with at least 2,800 citations (H-Index 29) and in excess of 730 total impact factors. He has specialised in microbial metabolic engineering and biomaterials since joining Tsinghua University in 1986. After receiving his PhD from Graz University (Austria) in 1989, he conducted post doctorate research at the University of Nottingham, UK and the University of Alberta in Canada, respectively.

Currently, Professor Chen is editor-in-chief for the newly launched journal “Frontiers in Biotechnology”, associate editor-in-chief for “Microbial Cell Factories”, and editor or editorial board member on a number of other biotechnology-related journals.

Dr. Zheng, has been Professor at the Department of Engineering Mechanics in Tsinghua University since 1993, and is the current Departmental Chair. He is also the founder and director of the Centre for Nano and Micro Mechanics (CNMM) at Tsinghua University. He received his PhD from the institution in 1989. His research interests include nanomechanics, nanodevices, micro and nano-bionics, mechanics of heterogeneous materials and damage mechanics. Additionally, his focus includes constitutive equations, including composites, polymers, biomaterials, teeth, polycrystals and ceramics, the theory of representations for tensors and tensor functions, mechanics of anisotropic behaviour and rational mechanics. He is a concurrent Professor at Monash University, Australia, and Nanchang University, China. Moreover, Professor Zheng has and continues to hold a plethora of distinguished academic positions including Royal Society Fellow at University of Nottingham, U.K., Europe Fellow and Visiting Professor at Institute de Mécanique de Grenoble, France, Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Technical University Aachen, Germany, and Professor at Jiangxi Polytechnic University, China.

Furthermore, Dr. Zheng is editor-in-Chief of ActaMechanicaSolidaSinica and a board member of nine international journals. Commenting on the new consultants, BNC’s CEO, Dr David Sarphie, commented: “We are delighted to expand into China as this forms an integral part of our international growth strategy. Indeed we are very pleased to welcome Professors George Guo-Qiang Chen and Quan-Shui Zheng to our scientific pool. They bring further high level scientific expertise to our microbiological and nano technological service offering. Consequently, we look forward to providing access to their extensive research and development skills and running projects for the benefit of the Chinese life science market.”
