Rainer-Rudolph-Prizes Awarded to Three Young and Talented Protein Scientists

Halle / Regensburg (Germany), 15th October 2012 – For the first time, the Rainer-Rudolph-Foundation has awarded three prizes to young researchers with outstanding theses and dissertations in the fields of protein biochemistry and biotechnology. The winners were presented with their €1000 prizes by Dr Ulrike Fiedler, chairwoman of the foundation and CEO of Scil Proteins, during the annual protein conference, “Faltertage”, in Regensburg.

Dr Matthias Feige and Dr Christoph Giese were awarded a Rainer-Rudolph-Prize for their doctoral research work on the folding and assembly of antibodies and on a new system for protein purification respectively, whereas, Beate Hoffmann received the award for her thesis on the human GLP1 receptor.

Dr Ulrike Fiedler commented at the awards ceremony: “I wish to congratulate all the award winners, who are thoroughly deserving of the accolade. The quality of their scientific work and the related publications is outstanding and identified them as worthy recipients in our eyes. All three works are in the spirit of Professor Rudolph’s research, which always maintained a close link between scientific research and industrial application.”

The Rainer-Rudolph-Foundation was established in 2011 by friends, companions, former colleagues and staff of the late Professor Rainer Rudolph on order to honour his outstanding scientific work and to promote young talents in protein sciences. Prior to his passing in 2009, Professor Rudolph was among the world’s leading protein biochemists as well as the co-founder of Scil Proteins GmbH.

The requirements for 2013 Rainer-Rudolph-Prize entries can be found on the Foundation’s website: www.rainer-rudolph-stiftung.de.

About the Rainer-Rudolph-Foundation

The Rainer-Rudolph-Foundation was established in May 2011 as a charitable foundation to honour the work of Professor Rainer Rudolph as a scientifically-outstanding and internationally-leading protein biochemist. After his postdoctoral lecture qualification at the University of Regensburg in 1984, he worked for several years as a department manager at Boehringer Mannheim (now Roche Diagnostics). In 1994, he was awarded a C4-professorship at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg where he managed to build a powerful technical biochemistry department. Together with Ulrike Fiedler and BioNet Holding GmbH, he founded Scil Proteins GmbH in 1999.

The Foundation will continue to address matters of particular concern to Rainer Rudolph such as the combination of academic and industrial research, the transformation of scientific insights into application and, in particular, the encouragement of young scientists. Its mission is to promote basic and applied research in the fields of protein biochemistry and biotechnology. The Foundation primarily addresses young scientists who have made extraordinary accomplishments in this area.

About Scil Proteins

Scil Proteins is a biopharmaceutical company discovering and developing Affilin® molecules and working with industry partners in the development and manufacture of protein therapeutics and diagnostics. Affilin® therapeutics and diagnostics are highly stable proteins with a high affinity for target molecules and little immunogenity. Scil Proteins has built a pipeline of Affilin® therapeutics targeting cancer. In addition, the Company has a longstanding expertise in protein production and process development and, therefore, offers GMP contract biomanufacturing to its clients in the biotech and pharma industries. With state-of-the-art equipment and a particular expertise in refolding proteins, the Company has an excellent track record in supplying top level support for its partners. Scil Proteins has supported a number of different companies such as Roche, Actavis and Lundbeck in process development and manufacturing of recombinant protein drugs.
