Lakewood Hospital Expanding Heart Center

CLEVELAND, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Mirroring trends across the country, Lakewood Hospital has shown an increase in the number of patients who are treated for coronary artery disease with an interventional procedure such as an angioplasty or a stent. Many patients who in years past might have required open-heart surgery are able to benefit from these less invasive procedures.

To meet the needs of this increasing trend in cardiac care, underway at Lakewood Hospital is a $3 million renovation project for physical refurbishments and expansion to create a 2800-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility on the hospital’s second floor, offering improved access for patients. The renovation includes converting three older catheterization laboratories to two digital catheterization suites and one procedure room where physicians will be able to implant devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators and perform complex electrophysiology studies. The new equipment will make Lakewood Hospital’s catheterization lab among the newest and most state-of-the-art in the area.

“This expansion demonstrates our continued commitment to our patients and to our physicians in meeting their needs. The renovation and the new equipment will allow us to provide the highest quality of care to our patients, " said Ravisankar Bolla, M.D, Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

Patient visits to the Heart Center in 2003 showed a demonstrated increase over 2002. Surgical and catheterization cases increased by 12 percent and electrophysiology studies increased by 30 percent.

“The new development at Lakewood Hospital will allow physicians to provide better cardiac care to their patients through improved imaging technology as well as improvements to the physical plant of the catheterization service,” said Mark Valentine, Vice President of Cardiac Services for Fairview, Lakewood and Lutheran hospitals, which comprise the Cleveland Clinic Health System - Western Region.

Founded in 1907, Lakewood Hospital is a 400-bed acute care, community-oriented hospital located in the heart of Cleveland’s West Shore community. Lakewood Hospital offers a wide range of health services and education programs for women, men and children. Each year, Lakewood Hospital provides high-quality and innovative patient care for more than 130,000 patients. In 1997, Lakewood Hospital became part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System, a partnership between the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and nine community hospitals.
