Viagra's 2 Rivals Grab Market Share In A Year

A year after the drug industry began making war over a pill for making love, newcomers are winning over prescriptions once dominated by Viagra. The popular blue, diamond-shaped pill that transformed the treatment of sexual impotence when it hit the market six years ago is losing market share and prescriptions, according to the most recent sales and prescription figures from health information firm IMS Health of Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Levitra became Viagra's first major competitor when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it in August of last year. A third rival, Cialis, joined the market in November 2003. Prior to their introduction, Viagra pills were the only oral prescription drugs available for an estimated 30 million American men who suffer some degree of erectile dysfunction.
