Amgen, Johnson & Johnson Anemia Drugs Up Death Risk in Cancer Patients-Study

USA Today -- Drugs designed to treat a common side effect of chemotherapy may actually increase the risk of death, according to the most comprehensive analysis yet. The products — Aranesp, Procrit and Epogen — increased the risk of death by 10%, a study in today's Journal of the American Medical Association shows. They increased the risk of dangerous blood clots in the lungs or legs by 57%. The analysis adds to concerns that have intensified over the past five years as studies have suggested that the products could fuel tumor growth.
