Advanced Analytical Technologies, Inc. Reveals New Platform for Rapid Genotypic Identification of Microorganisms at ASM 2009

AMES, Iowa, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Analytical, based in Ames, IA will reveal the latest results generated from their new instrument platform, the DNA PROfiler(TM) system. This instrument rapidly identifies microorganisms in less than 4 hours by producing a genetic fingerprint or PROfile. The generated fingerprint when compared to a database of known organisms can be used for either genus species or strain typing and tracking.

Because of its ease of use and speed, the DNA PROfiler(TM) is a game-changer in the field of genotypic identification of microorganisms. Until now, the marketplace has used biochemical-based identification systems which typically can take days to provide an answer. By comparison, the DNA PROfiler(TM) generates accurate results in under 4 hours by using 4 easy steps: DNA extraction, DNA amplification, controlled cleavage of the DNA, and multiplex CE separation of the cleaved fragments. With this multi-step technique, the DNA PROfiler(TM) combines the advantages of DNA sequencing with the advantages of Ribotyping technology. And the instrument has been put into practice, as numerous organisms from the species Candida, Mycobacterium, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, E. coli and Bacillus have been accurately identified. Advanced Analytical is currently working with the Cleveland Clinic, the US Army and other research institutes to evaluate the system for microorganism identification.

Dr. Gary Procop, Chair, Clinical Pathology, Cleveland Clinic, added; “We evaluated the differentiation of various microorganisms on a prototype instrument and compared it with other genotypic and phenotypic methods. The instrument is capable of identifying organisms quickly and easily. The implementation of such technology in the clinical laboratory should result in the faster identification of important human pathogens.”

“The system has been in development for over a year now and has been tested on numerous organisms, including mycobacteria and Candida species. In all cases, the DNA PROfiler(TM) results accurately identified each organism species. There is no question that this instrument can benefit any process that needs a rapid genotype,” said Dr. Steven J Lasky, CEO of Advanced Analytical.

Advanced Analytical intends to partner with companies looking for rapid, accurate genotypic identification of organisms and who are knowledgeable in the following markets: clinical and industrial microbiology, plant, animal and pharmaceutical sciences, consumer product testing and forensic testing.
