Concerned that GlaxoSmithKline is trying an end run around intellectual property rights, the University of California at Los Angeles has told its faculty not to apply to a new grant program in which researchers are solicited to collaborate on drug discovery without the “bottleneck” created by contract negotiations. The Discovery Fast Track is designed as a competition to “accelerate the translation of academic research into novel therapies,” according to a May 21 statement from Glaxo. Winners will partner with Glaxo investigators from its Discover. Partnerships with Academia team, which was created in 2010. The idea is to “avoid initial contract negotiations, which are often perceived as the biggest bottleneck in the pharma-academia collaborative process.”
