The self-adhering barrier is easy to use and covers a patient¹s upper arm prior to the application of any aneroid blood pressure cuff. Made of a soft, absorbent tissue and backed with a polyethylene film, the barrier offers leak-proof resistance to fluids. The soft tissue side of the barrier touches the patient¹s skin providing comfort, while allowing for an accurate blood pressure reading.
A study published in ³Unnecessary Deaths: The Human and Financial Costs of Hospital Infections,² by Betsy McCaughey, Ph. D., stated that 77 percent of blood pressure cuffs that are rolled on trolleys from room to room in hospitals were contaminated. And 83 percent of blood pressure cuffs in intensive care units were contaminated.
³Cleaning blood pressure cuffs is time-consuming and less than effective at removing contaminants from the cuff fabric and Velcro,² said Jeff Murphy, vice president of marketing for TIDI. ³The barrier offers quick and easy protection while measuring a patient¹s blood pressure. This is a great way to reassure a patient of hygienic protection while also extending the life of equipment.²
