Bar Harbor, Maine—In preparation for the July opening of its temporary research facility in Farmington, Conn., The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine has filled its first administrative position.
Senior Human Resources Manager Carol O’Brien of Mystic, Conn., will be in charge of HR functions for the new translational research facility. O’Brien brings 15 years of human resources experience to JAX Genomic Medicine, most recently serving as director of corporate human resources for Schneider Electric in West Kingston, R.I.
From 2001 to 2008, O’Brien was employed by Pfizer Global Research & Development, a multinational pharmaceutical company with offices in Groton, Conn. She is a graduate of King’s College in Charlotte, N.C., and holds a certificate in organizational development from Columbia University.
O’Brien is working in the Laboratory’s temporary facility, a renovated 9,700-square-foot space in an administrative building on the UConn Health Center campus in Farmington. At least 21 employees will be housed at the temporary site by the end of this year. Ground will be broken in January 2013 for a new, 173,000-square-foot permanent facility for JAX Genomic Medicine on a 17-acre parcel of the Farmington campus.
The nonprofit Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine represents a partnership between The Jackson Laboratory, based in Bar Harbor, Maine, the University of Connecticut and the UConn Health Center. The new center will bring together scientists and clinicians to bridge the gap between the study of mammalian genetics and the personalized clinical care of patients with cancer, diabetes and other genetic diseases and conditions. The facility will house 300 biomedical researchers, technicians and support staff in advanced computing facilities and laboratories by 2020.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a facility in Sacramento, Calif. as well as the new genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Conn. It employs a total staff of about 1,400. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human disease, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
