To build up its medical device business in rural parts of India and China, Johnson & Johnson is focusing heavily on a strategy that involves simplifying things. The company, which is one of the world’s largest medical device makers, is re-tooling glucose monitors with fewer features, making surgical tools less complicated and creating training centers to ensure that doctors are prepared to use the new, sophisticated devices. In China, the company is laying some groundwork for future business with an innovation center opening today in Suzhou City, about 90 minutes oustide of Shanghai. The center, modeled after one in Mumbai, will serve as a hub of research, where scientists familiar with the region will work on developing and modifying devices for the market.
