Frost & Sullivan: Despite Multiple Benefits, Healthcare Authorities Lukewarm to Adopting Multi-site and Regional Healthcare IT Projects

London – 20 June 2011 – Multi-site and regional healthcare IT projects refer to IT systems installed across boundaries that allow access to various authorised remote users. Such systems may have a central server that stores the data, which is accessible, both from local and remote systems. It supports the sharing of a set of resources across various healthcare centres in a given network.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.healthcareIT.frost.com), Strategic Outlook on European Multi-Site and Regional Projects – Trends and Competitive Landscape, finds that multi-site systems deliver the advantages of completely integrated systems, since there is a central server and several concurrent users.

“This workflow reduces the risks of data replication and security,” notes Frost & Sullivan Programme Manager E. Sujith. “One of the major benefits of multi-site projects is cost saving, because of the sharing of resources such as databases or the entire system across various locations – instead of having to build it repeatedly.”

In addition, the actual patient accessibility and safety and operational gains made possible by multi-site and regional IT projects are significant. The value proposition provided by multi-site systems such as the enhanced quality of clinical decisions further pushes the market’s growth potential.

Healthcare organisations across Europe have their budgets pre-planned for specific activities and vendors who are actively involved in multi-site and regional projects recognise the lack of funding for large-scale projects. The difficulty of securing funding, combined with the scarcity of internal resources within hospitals, can cause long delays in implementation cycles and can even result in projects being postponed.

“The design and implementation of a multi-site IT system is more complex than a single site system and demands highly skilled IT staff who could be costlier to employ at the vendors’ end,” explains Sujith. “Not surprisingly, the lack of affordable and highly skilled staff results in delays in system implementation.”

Many organisations do not recognise a clear business case for financial and organisational investments in multi-site and regional projects for hospitals in a region. Healthcare IT vendors need to collaborate with end users to address such issues and demonstrate a clear ROI.

“As in the case of other health care information technologies, the costs associated with multi-site and regional projects implementation is typically borne primarily by the department of health directly while many of the benefits accrue to patients, payers and society as a whole in terms of improved health care,” says Sujith. “Supportive policies and new financial incentives would help to redress these deficiencies and accelerate the more widespread adoption of multi-site and regional projects.”
