Family Recovery Centers Opens Intensive Outpatient Program in St. Charles in Response to Increased Need for Adolescent Mental Health Treatment

Family Recovery Centers (FRC) announces the opening of a new location in St. Charles, Ill. It currently has locations in Chicago, Lake Bluff and Hoffman Estates.

ST. CHARLES, Ill., July 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Family Recovery Centers (FRC), an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adolescent girls and boys, ages 12 to 19, struggling with depression, anxiety, substance use, self-harm, suicidal ideation and more, announces the opening of a new location in St. Charles, Ill. It currently has locations in Chicago, Lake Bluff and Hoffman Estates.

Scheduled to open August 1, 2018, the new IOP represents a growing need for more frequent and a higher level of counseling services and group therapy for teenagers who are having a difficult time with relationships, academics, social media, bullying, sports performance, drugs and alcohol, sexual orientation and all the other stressors young people face today.

A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics found that the number of kids and teens hospitalized for suicidal thoughts or attempts more than doubled in the U.S. from 2008 to 2015. In addition, nearly four in 10 (38 percent) girls ages 13-17 and more than a quarter (26 percent) of boys suffer from an anxiety disorder, according to National Institute of Mental Health data. Other studies show similar data regarding adolescent mental health.

“The statistics are alarming. We can and need to come together as a community to instill hope in these young people and provide a safe place for healing. Every child deserves to be heard and helped,” said Dana Slowinski AM, LCSW, a St. Charles native and Co-Founder/Co-Owner of Family Recovery Centers. “FRC exists for one reason: to provide the best possible care to families and adolescents throughout the Chicagoland area... because that is what they deserve and need.”

The clinical team at the new St. Charles site, located at 2075 Foxfield Drive, Suite 103, will be comprised of a multi-disciplinary team including a Medical Director, Clinical Director, Program Manager and Primary Counselors. The program will be available during the evenings, 5 to 8 p.m., on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Groups to be offered include: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Training for the whole family; Parent and Peer Process Groups; Multi-Family Process Groups; Art Therapy; DBT Mindfulness and Meditation/Yoga; Young Person’s 12-Step Meeting or Mood/Anxiety Group; and Relapse Prevention.

DBT, the therapeutic foundation of FRC, is predicated on four fundamental components: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. There is a fifth skill, called Walking the Middle Path, adapted for adolescents and their families.

Studies repeatedly indicate that DBT is a superior treatment approach when working with adolescents. It has proven to reduce self-harm, suicidal ideation, and depression in young people. Of even greater importance, these improvements have been found to last for at least one year after treatment has concluded, which suggests that long-term change is likely in the adolescent population.

Perhaps the greatest and most beneficial component of FRC’s care is parental involvement in the program. “This is so important on many levels,” said FRC’s other Co-Founder and Co-Owner Ryanne Bright LCPC, CADC. “Parents deserve to be understood, supported and challenged. Adolescents deserve to be accepted while learning the skills required to lead them into a healthy and successful future.”

A ribbon cutting for the community is being planned for August with an open house in early Fall; details available soon.

If parents are unsure about whether their child needs this level of therapy, they can call 847.457.6730 ext. 310 to schedule a complimentary assessment.

“We want to make sure that no need goes unmet, no child remains misunderstood and no family lives without hope,” added Slowinski and Bright.
