DES MOINES, Iowa, March 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Certintell Telehealth, a company focused on bringing telehealth solutions to millions of Community Health Center patients, shares how telehealth can be a useful tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

With the spread of the novel COVID-19, patients who may be experiencing symptoms should limit their contact with others if possible. As of now, a vaccine potentially a year and a half away.1 That said, solutions must be considered on how to best contain COVID-19. One way is through telehealth, especially for frontline Community Health Centers. By receiving preliminary screenings or information remotely, at-risk patients can avoid going to crowded clinics or hospitals and risking further spread of the virus.

The key takeaways regarding telehealth as it relates to COVID-19:

  1. H.R.6074: Passed on March 6 and grants $8.3 billion to address COVID-19, allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services to waive the rule that Medicare patients using telehealth cannot use their home as the originating site.
  2. Vulnerable Populations: The older the individual, the higher the fatality rate. Additionally, the presence of underlying chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer also increase a patient's chance of catching COVID-19.2
  3. Telehealth Assisting Containment: Using telehealth to initially screen patients reduces the time spent waiting for a provider in crowded clinics and hospitals. It also keeps patients from having to go to crowded areas if they are experiencing symptoms and potentially infecting others.
  4. Opportunities Enabling Billable Events: Although there are some barriers to begin using remote care to combat COVID-19, there are opportunities to streamline the process such as enabling clinical staff to reach out to patients and gain their consent for services.
