STC Cluster Member IntelliMedical Technologies Wins People’s Choice Award at COMS 2012 Young Technology Award

Melbourne, Australia – 6 July 2012: STC led a trade mission to Europe, with stops in Germany, the Netherlands and ending at the 17th Annual Commercialization of Micro- and Nanotechnology Systems (COMS) conference in Tonsberg, Norway on 24-27 of June.

IntelliMedical Technologies, a start-up medical device company located in Melbourne, Australia competed in the COMS 2012 Young Technology Award, winning the People’s Choice award. Geoff Rogers, Director at IntelliMedical Technologies who presented their competition pitch, said, “We feel very honoured to have won. COMS is an excellent forum for like-minded people from all sectors to gather and discuss not just innovation, but also how to translate that innovation into real, market leading products and services. We are extremely passionate about our technology and the real benefits that it could provide to patients undergoing minimally invasive surgical procedures. I thank everyone who helped create this opportunity for companies like us, including the Small Technologies Cluster and the Victorian Government.”

IntelliMedical Technologies is a specialist developer of niche next-generation micro-medical devices. With a unique team of leaders in business, engineering and medicine, they are passionately driven to deliver medical products to market to improve patient care. Their goal is to push the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery and to provide technology-based solutions to the problems faced by surgical practitioners. IntelliMedical’s flagship device is the IntelliWire, a 0.014" (0.36mm) diameter robotically steerable guidewire for use in interventional cardiology and other minimally invasive procedures.

Today, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide - in the US alone, 1 person dies every 60 seconds from a coronary cardiovascular disorder. With an ageing worldwide population, this statistic is forecast to worsen, presenting a great need for technologies such as the IntelliWire that enable practitioners to deliver faster and more effective treatment. STC has a history of helping companies make connections that drive follow-on discussions and translating these early discussions into projects.

This trade mission was supported by the Department of Business and Innovation, Victorian State Government.
