AusBiotech Ltd. 2010 Highlights Growing Reputation of Australian Biotech

4 November 2010 -- The AusBiotech 2010 conference witnessed the growing reputation of the Australian biotechnology sector on the world stage. With rising interest from international delegates, investors and speakers, Australia’s achievements in biotechnology innovation are gaining attention across the globe.

Growing on the triumph of last year, AusBiotech once again began its annual conference with the highly successful Australasian Life Sciences Investment Summit (ALSIS) 2010. The premier life sciences investment event for Australia and the Asia-Pacific region attracted 150 invited investors from 99 organisations to view a showcase of 35 selected Australian biotechnology companies. Of the unprecedented number of attendees (256), 49 investors representing 39 companies joined ALSIS 2010 from overseas, with 19 US investor companies sending at least one representative.

AusBiotech 2010, the industry’s biotechnology conference for the Asia Pacific region and associated events, attracted 1,503 participants to Melbourne from 19 – 22 October for its annual meeting. Registered delegates included 190 international delegates from 20 countries, with the largest delegations coming from New Zealand, the US, the UK, Canada and Singapore.

The world-class Business Matching Program facilitated 2,947 meeting requests and 1,051 confirmed meetings during the three-day period of AusBiotech 2010, an indicator of business confidence and continued strength for the industry.

Delegates at AusBiotech 2010 had the chance to attend a series of plenary speakers and agenda-setting sessions from influential international biotechnology leaders including Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO); Professor Nadia Rosenthal, founding director of Monash University’s Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute; and a number of senior heads of global pharmaceutical companies. The conference proudly presented 174 speakers in a range of fields, 47 of whom travelled from overseas.

“The AusBiotech 2010 conference gathered the leaders of the biotechnology sector, both here and abroad, to debate the important issues and latest developments affecting our industry,” said Dr Anna Lavelle, CEO of AusBiotech. “Australia is gaining increasing attention for its biotech innovation, and we are seeing a combined confidence and the continued development of solutions for the benefit of the global community.”
