Drug approvals in the U.S. hit a 21-year high in 2017, with 46 novel medicines winning a green light from the FDA—more than double the amount in 2016. That makes 2017 the second-best year for FDA approvals since 1996, when the agency approved 53 novel drugs. We will have to see whether the promise of faster drug approvals will happen in 2018.
