Welch Allyn Will Unveil Third Generation Spot Vitals Monitor, Showcase Connected Patient Documentation Solutions At HIMSS15

Products offer easy-to-use features and early warning options that provide access to information clinicians need to provide the best possible patient care

HIMSS15

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Welch Allyn, a leading medical diagnostic device company, will unveil the new Connex® Spot Monitor (CSM) and showcase its family of connected electronic vitals documentation solutions at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) trade show next week at McCormick Place in Chicago. The CSM is a wireless system that provides comprehensive and accurate patient documentation using a single touchscreen device designed to capture and transmit patient data to an electronic medical record (EMR) to enable improvements in patient safety and clinical decision-making and reduce risk to facilities. The company will also showcase its mVSM™ (Mobile Vital Signs Monitoring) solution along with a revolutionary system that can alert clinicians to the risk of significant adverse events that may occur in hospitals, including issues around failure to rescue, respiratory failure, falls, hospital acquired pressure ulcers and cardiopulmonary arrests.

“We’ll use our new devices to demonstrate how clinicians can automate the process of capturing patients’ vital signs and streamline data management”

“We’ll use our new devices to demonstrate how clinicians can automate the process of capturing patients’ vital signs and streamline data management,” said Garrison Gomez, senior director of Vital Signs and Cardiology, US & Canada, at Welch Allyn. “The technology we build into our products is derived from clinicians’ every-day demands. Our customers often cite problems like data transmission errors, time spent on manually documenting vital signs and patient safety as threats to their patients and their workflow. We think our solutions can provide a cure for what is ailing healthcare, and we’re putting them to the test at HIMSS.”

On display at Welch Allyn booth 3657, the configurable Welch Allyn Connex Spot Monitor is a third generation spot vitals monitor that combines leading vital signs parameter technologies with flexibility for use across patient populations spanning neonatal through adult. The device fully automates vital signs capture, interval monitoring, early warning score tracking and data transfer to a facility’s EMR system.

The CSM is a configurable, full-color touchscreen monitor that provides comprehensive and accurate patient documentation using a single device, including:

  • blood pressure and pulse rate utilizing 15-second SureBP® with blood pressure averaging technology;
  • SureTemp® Plus thermometry technology;
  • professional-grade pulse oximetry options from Masimo® (NASDAQ: MASI), Nonin Medical®, and Covidien® (NYSE:COV); and
  • customizable fields for entry of additional patient information collected at the bedside such as pain level and responsiveness.

The company’s mVSM solution, also on display at the Welch Allyn booth, incorporates wireless patient monitoring devices and a mobile gateway device, (e.g., tablet or smartphone) that transmits vital signs data, answers to patient care plan questions and patient messages to a HIPAA-compliant cloud-based web portal for patient data management by healthcare professionals and other authorized stakeholders. The solution is 510(k) cleared for marketing in the U.S. and can be used to help manage most major chronic diseases. It is especially useful for helping with complex chronic patients who have multiple conditions.

Welch Allyn will also showcase a comprehensive clinical surveillance system that electronically captures and documents patient vitals from the bedside directly to the EMR and provides data to help alert clinicians to the risk of significant adverse events that may occur in hospitals. The company’s Connex® Clinical Surveillance System (CSS) solution expands the capabilities of traditional intermittent vital signs systems to provide effective tools for the clinical staff on med/surg floors to help them manage higher acuity patients by effectively identifying, monitoring and scoring early warning signs of potential patient deterioration.

Through exclusive technology partnerships, the Connex CSS system benefits from the integration of three additional monitoring parameters—all designed to help in avoiding adverse events—into the Welch Allyn Connex® Vital Signs Monitor (CVSM) in addition to traditional automated measurements such as pulse rate, blood pressure, temperature and pulse oximetry. The Connex CSS solution offers acoustic respiration Masimo; Microstream® end-tidal carbon dioxide technology from Covidien; and contact-free motion, heart rate and respiratory rate monitoring from EarlySense®.
