GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Varian Medical Systems , world leader in advanced radiotherapy and radiosurgery technology for treating cancer, is demonstrating its full range of technologies and products aimed at improving the speed and precision of treatments at the 2008 European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden, from September 14th-18th.
Chief among the products on display will be Varian’s new RapidArc(TM) capability, the most successful new product introduction in the company’s history. RapidArc delivers a volumetric intensity-modulated radiation therapy treatment in a single or multiple arcs of the treatment machine around the patient and makes it possible to deliver advanced image-guided IMRT two to eight times faster than is possible with conventional IMRT.
“The success of RapidArc since its launch earlier this year has been unbelievable and we will now be demonstrating next-generation RapidArc capabilities such as treatments utilizing non-coplanar arcs and dose-less regions,” says Rolf Staehelin, Varian’s European marketing director. Dr. Luca Cozzi, scientific advisor to the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland in Bellinzona, will act as RapidArc clinical speaker on the Varian booth.
Varian will also be spotlighting the Novalis Tx(TM) linear accelerator with the new high-definition multi-leaf collimator, the HD120-MLC. Novalis Tx, the result of a collaboration between Varian Medical Systems and BrainLAB, offers radiosurgery for a wide range of intra-cranial and extra-cranial tumours and lesions. It features high dose delivery rates, which means that treatments can be delivered rapidly. Novalis Tx also offers dynamic ultra-fine beam shaping and non-invasive, highly-precise frameless patient positioning for rapid and comfortable treatments.
Along with the On-Board Imager(R) device for clinically-practical image guided radiotherapy (IGRT), Varian will also be demonstrating its Clinac(R) linear accelerators, Acuity(TM) imaging device for planning and simulating treatments, ARIA(TM) oncology information and image management system, Eclipse(TM) treatment planning software, advanced spot-scanning proton therapy solutions and the full range of planning and delivery tools for brachytherapy.
The Varian booth also features a virtual reality theater seating 15 people at a time, giving viewers a virtual experience of advanced IMRT, IGRT and RapidArc treatments via the innovative ‘VERTual’ program developed by Prof. Andy Beavis and his team at the Princess Royal Hospital in Hull, England. Varian can be found at Booth 03:22 at the Gothenburg Convention Center.
