Danbury, CT – May 7, 2010: The Society for Biomolecular Sciences (SBS) announced today that Patrick S. Daugherty, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, and Biomolecular Science and Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will give a presentation on Friday, May 21, 2010, as part of the SBS Symposium, Biopharmaceuticals: Exploring Synergies Across Drug Formats, at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square.
This two-day meeting will address biopharmaceuticals, a rapidly growing sector of the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Daugherty will present, Protein Ligand and Substrate Discovery Using Cell-Based Libraries. His presentation will focus on the discovery of ligands and substrates that exhibit specific, high affinity recognition of proteins within and outside of the cell is a cornerstone in therapeutic discovery.
“We developed and deployed several cell-based library screening tools to evolve molecular specificity in vitro and in the intracellular environment, to engineer the activity and selectivity of enzyme substrates, to develop protease-resistant peptide antagonists, and to create ligands with enzyme-actuated binding activity,” said Daugherty. “The expanded capabilities afforded by such new discovery tools provide new opportunities for biopharmaceutical design and development.”
Dr. Daugherty received his B.S. in chemical engineering from The University of Minnesota in 1993, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. He was a Virology-Oncology Senior Research Fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle during 1999-2001, before joining the chemical engineering faculty at UCSB in 2001. He is the recipient of a National Sciences Foundation Career Award (2005), Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award (2006), and an ACS Young Investigator Award from the Division of Biochemical Technology (2007). Dr. Daugherty is also a founder of, and consultant for, CytomX Therapeutics, LLC (Santa Barbara, CA).
