Helping Health Professionals Combat The Vaccine Hesitancy Crisis
Helping Health Professionals Combat The Vaccine Hesitancy Crisis
As confidence in vaccines drops to an all-time low, a global health crisis looms. Concerned parents are increasingly looking to health professionals to answer their questions about vaccinations, the risks and benefits.
Director of the London Vaccination Clinic and authority on immunisation and travel health, Katy Peters, has taken on the task of gathering vaccination scientists and worldwide experts to share the latest research with parents and health professionals in a free online Global Vaccination Summit starting on 16th September.
“I am deeply concerned about the lack of quality information available to parents and health professionals about vaccinations, which with the added sensationalism of the anti-vaccination movement, is leading to a very serious situation for our communities.
“Parents trust their local doctor and nurses and look to them for advice, but they’re not armed with the training or sometimes, even the latest research, to answer these questions. In a growing sceptical society, we need a way to assist parents in making an informed decision,” Katy Peters states.
In the Global Vaccination Summit, Katy Peters interviews our top researchers and experts on vaccination theory and practice to explore their views about addressing this situation and providing better information to parents and health professionals.
A resounding theme from the interviews is the clear crisis of trust surrounding vaccinations, rooted in the distrust of government and corporate institutions. In the absence of trust, parents feel the increased responsibility to engage in and manage their children’s healthcare. They’re looking for information online and see a stream of misinformation from the emotive-driven anti-vaccination movement which causes further confusion and increases vaccination hesitancy.
“Parents and patients don’t know what to believe. They’re confused and anxious. With sensational stories and social media dominating the vaccine conversation, people have questions. But these doubts don’t mean they’re “anti-vax” or unreachable. Research shows a spectrum of vaccine hesitancy, all with different perspectives that we need to empathise with and understand,” Katy Peters.
A common thread throughout the Global Vaccination Summit is that parents and patients trust their health professionals and look to them to answer their questions. It’s up to local doctors and nurses to take on this responsibility and lead the way in reducing fear and protecting lives.
At the Global Vaccination Summit, health professionals will explore how to approach each view without judgement and answer questions so parents feel safe and secure about vaccinations.
Katy Peters states: “This is our moment to be 100% open, honest and transparent about vaccinations so we can regain trust in the public and reduce vaccine hesitancy.
The Global Vaccination Summit starts on Monday 16th September and is free, online and open to parents, interested citizens and health professionals to attend. Katy interviews many of the world’s leading minds on vaccinations to include: Dr. Robert Steffen from the University of Zurich’s Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases, Dr George Kassianos from the National Immunisation Lead Royal College of General Practitioners, Dr. Katie Attwell from the University of Western Australia, Dr. Kathryn Edwards of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program, Journalist and Penguin Random House author of, “The Informed Parent: A Science-Based Resource for Your Child’s First Four Years,” Tara Haelle, and James Moore, the Director of The Exeter Travel Clinic, the Travel Health Consultancy, and a specialist in travel and expedition medicine.
