The 2013 Merck & Co.-Pfizer Diabetes Deal Now Looks Very Savvy

The increasing incidence of type-2 diabetes, being driven by the obesity epidemic, is a major source of concern for health officials globally. Increased levels of blood sugar leads to kidney disease, blindness, amputations of limbs and, eventually, heart attacks and strokes. There are a number of different medications that are used to help lower a patient’s blood sugar, but none are ideal. In addition, these many drugs have posed a conundrum for physicians and other healthcare providers as long-term studies have shown that, while accomplishing the desired decrease in hemoglobin A1c levels, these drugs haven’t reduced heart attacks and strokes, the long-term desired outcome of these treatments.
