Sigma-Aldrich Corporation Becomes First Life Science Company to Publish in PubMed’s Peer-Reviewed Video Journal JoVE

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sigma-Aldrich today announced the publication of its first peer-reviewed video protocol in the PubMed accessible Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). This makes Sigma-Aldrich the first life science company to submit a video protocol to the traditional scientific publication process. Peer-reviewed video protocols are an innovative and highly effective tool to increase the efficiency of scientific communication and with it the speed of basic research and drug discovery (http://www.jove.com/index/Details.stp?ID=899).

“Producing peer reviewed resources and making them available in locations that researchers trust is an invaluable tool for the research community,” said John Custer, Marketing Manager-Biochemistry for Sigma-Aldrich. “We look forward to hearing our customers’ feedback while we continue working on additional video protocols.”

Less than two years old, JoVE is a scientific journal that publishes video articles of biological experiments from leading academic institutions including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley. JoVE recently became the first and only video-based scientific journal to be indexed in MEDLINE and PubMed, the official repositories of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

“Scientists depend on fast access to high quality information both from other scientists and increasingly from industry. The fact that an industry leader dedicates its resources to make its scientific knowledge accessible using the most innovative forms of scientific communication will strongly benefit the scientific community,” said Klaus Korak, co-founder of JoVE.

The first video protocol titled, Sigma’s Non-Specific Protease Activity Assay -- Casein as a Substrate, is a multipurpose protease assay employed by life science researchers in academia, biotech, and pharmaceutical industry. The video protocol can be viewed on JoVE and the Sigma Aldrich website and is available in both English and Chinese. Sigma Aldrich plans to continue creating video protocols spanning many different topics of scientific research.

About JoVE: JoVE is the first-and-only video-based scientific journal indexed in MEDLINE and PubMed. JoVE was founded in October 2006 as the first online journal devoted to video-publication of life science research. This novel, dynamic, and visual approach to scientific publishing aims to increase the reproducibility of published studies and to improve the efficiency of research in the biological sciences. JoVE has assembled an Editorial Board that includes 24 scientists from Harvard, Princeton, NIH, and other leading institutions across the US, Europe, and Japan. JoVE has so far released 19 monthly issues including over 230 video protocols on experimental approaches in developmental biology, neuroscience, microbiology and other fields. To facilitate the integration of video content into scientific publishing, JoVE has developed an organizational and technical infrastructure to perform and/or assist scientists with filming and editing in their labs.
