WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Robert L. Grossman, the Frederick H. Rawson Professor of Medicine and a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago, will give the keynote address at the 2018 Internet2 Technology Exchange taking place October 15-18 in Orlando. Grossman will present on “Data Clouds, Data Commons and Data Ecosystems: How Data Science is Changing the Way We Analyze Scientific Data, Make Discoveries and Reproduce Research.”

Among many other projects, Grossman leads the Center for Translational Data Science at the University of Chicago, a research center developing the discipline of translational data science and applying it to advance biology, medicine, healthcare and environmental research. Grossman’s keynote will provide an overview of data commons and describe lessons learned from the National Cancer Institute Genomic Data Commons, the Open Commons Consortium Environmental Data Commons, the Bionimbus Data Commons, the BloodPAC Data Commons, and the BRAIN Commons.

“Researchers are increasingly working with large data sets that create technical challenges due to their size, complexity, privacy requirements, and the specialized tools needed for their analysis,” said Howard Pfeffer, president and CEO of Internet2. “Supporting researchers in data science requires participation from the entire research and education ecosystem in ensuring that the technical infrastructure—advanced network, trust framework, identity and access management tools—can facilitate the secure exchange of research data to help solve the world’s most pressing research problems. Professor Grossman’s presentation at the Technology Exchange is a timely and welcomed perspective in our efforts to solve common technology challenges in support of researchers.”

The Technology Exchange is Internet2’s annual technical meeting for the research and education (R&E) community to share best practices, accelerate innovation and advance technology, and this year it is co-hosted by the University of Central Florida and Florida LambdaRail.
