Olympus Corporation Investigated for Kickbacks, False Marketing Claims

TOKYO—The U.S. unit of Japanese camera and medical-equipment maker Olympus Corp. said it is under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for possible violations of antikickback and false claims laws, and that any settlement could weigh on future earnings.

Olympus Corp. of the Americas has been under investigation sinceNovember 2011 for possible violations of laws that typically apply to inappropriately encouraging medical professionals and institutions to buy goods and services, the Japanese parent company said Friday. As spokeswoman said Olympus entered talks with U.S. authorities in the October-December quarter. , since the investigation was ongoing, it couldn’t elaborate beyond its news release.
