St. Louis Business Journal -- Monsanto Co. recently announced internally that it plans to eliminate between 70 and 90 jobs across the nation through layoffs and attrition by the end of the month.
The job cuts are part of restructuring announced last year that is reducing the company’s workforce by 1,800 positions, or 8 percent.
Late last month, Monsanto announced plans to “drastically narrow” its Roundup herbicide portfolio and slash prices to better compete with generic Chinese weed-killers.
Creve Coeur, Mo.-based Monsanto (NYSE: MON), led by Chairman and Chief Executive Hugh Grant, makes seeds and insect- and herbicide-resistant crops. It is one of the largest employers in St. Louis with 4,000 local employees and sales of $11.7 billion in 2009. It has more than 21,000 workers worldwide.
