People on the Atkins diet may be losing weight but they are also likely to be in a bad mood, say researchers in the US, who say that a lack of carbohydrates will reduce levels of the mood-regulating hormone seratonin. There are an estimated 3 million people in the UK on the Atkins diet, and while it has not made such an impact on other European countries, interest in modifying carbohydrate consumption looks set to grow with rising obesity rates.
