INNERCOOL Therapies Launches Accutrol Catheter With Temperature Sensor

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- INNERCOOL therapies today announced the launch of its Accutrol(TM) Catheter, which measures a patient’s core body temperature during therapeutic hypothermia. The technology enhances the company’s Celsius Control System(TM), a proprietary technology platform with applications in a variety of clinical situations where patient cooling, temperature maintenance and warming are indicated. Celsius Control with the Accutrol Catheter is the first and only endovascular cooling system to integrate a sensor into the catheter, allowing direct core body temperature measurement during all phases of induced hypothermia treatment.

“When cooling or warming of a patient is required during critical clinical situations, it is vital for physicians to be able to accurately measure and tightly control body temperature to the desired therapeutic level, or a patient’s health could be at risk,” said Mike Magers, President of INNERCOOL. “Currently, physicians use bladder, rectum or ear probes, which can be slow, cumbersome to use and may not reflect true core body temperature. The Accutrol temperature sensor, which is incorporated within the catheter, can reliably measure patient core temperature thus providing accurate temperature feedback to control the cooling or heating of the patient to the desired temperature.”

“We have been using the Celsius Control technology for nearly two years now and recently have begun working with the Accutrol Catheter,” said J. Claude Hemphill, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco. “Accutrol is an excellent product enhancement which has made patient care even more convenient. We have found the integrated temperature sensor to be accurate and precise in assessing core body temperature in the Intensive Care Unit.”

INNERCOOL’s Celsius Control System is a catheter-based endovascular technology platform to precisely induce, maintain and/or reverse hypothermia (mild cooling) to prevent tissue damage during periods of ischemia. Celsius Control consists of an endovascular catheter and console. The distal portion of the catheter contains a flexible, metallic Temperature Control Element (TCE), which is cooled or warmed with sterile saline solution circulated to and from the console. When placed in the inferior vena cava, the TCE can rapidly exchange heat directly with the blood, resulting in cooling or warming of the downstream organs and body. The System does not infuse fluid into the patient, nor is blood circulated outside the body.

INNERCOOL has received FDA clearance for the Celsius Control System to induce, maintain and reverse mild hypothermia in neurosurgical patients in surgery and recovery/intensive care. Subsequent indications for Celsius Control have also been obtained in fever control and cardiac surgery. The company has received the CE mark allowing the Celsius Control System to be marketed in the European Community.

About INNERCOOL therapies

INNERCOOL therapies is a San Diego, California based medical device company leading the emerging field of temperature control therapy. The company’s Celsius Control System(TM) is an endovascular technology platform designed to precisely induce, maintain and reverse hypothermia (mild cooling). Clinical research suggests that inducing hypothermia may prevent tissue damage during periods of ischemia in surgical and critical care procedures. Potential applications include endovascular cooling for myocardial infarction (heart attack), acute stroke (brain attack) and cardiac arrest.
