Hamamatsu Photonics Ultra High Sensitivity Photon Counting Photomultiplier Tube Modules

April 05, 2012 -- Hamamatsu Photonics, the world’s leading manufacturer of photomultiplier tubes (PMT’s) and photomultiplier tube modules, introduces a new range of revolutionary high sensitivity PMT’s.

Traditional bialkali PMT modules, having peak quantum efficiency (QE) of little more than 25% at 400 nm, have remained largely unchanged in sensitivity for many decades. A technical breakthrough in our material research laboratories means that new super bialkali (SBA) tubes with 35% QE and ultra bialkali tubes (UBA) with up to 45% QE have been produced.

The new H10682 series are photon counting heads, incorporating an SBA/UBA PMT along with a high speed photon counting circuit and a high voltage power supply circuit. The high voltage power supply and discrimination level are preset to optimum values during the manufacturing process, allowing simple operation from just a +5V supply. Also included within the module is an over light detection function which protects the PMT from excess incident light and allows a user to discriminate between real and erroneous data.

Hamamatsu also supply a unique range of purpose built accessories, including optical blocks, which can incorporate a range of filters, beam splitters and other optical components to make a unique optical system tailored to the end users application.

The high quantum efficiencies and noise free gain offered by the H10682 series make for an ideal photon counting solution for a variety of analytical and medical applications, such as high energy physics, DNA chip readers, flowcytometers and many more.
