This year's conference theme is Discovering, Innovating, and Engineering Future Biomediciene. It will cover diverse topics from cutting-edge biomedical and healthcare technology research and development, clinical applications, to biomedical education.
The conference program consists of high profile plenary and keynote lectures, symposia, workshops, invited sessions, oral and poster sessions, and exhibitions. Dr. Leroy Hood, President of the Institute for Systems Biology, will deliver the plenary lecture, Systems Medicine and Transformational Technologiesand Strategies: A Revolution in Healthcare. Additionally, eleven global leaders in biomedical engineering will deliver keynote lectures throughout the conference.
A major highlight of this year's conference will take place during the opening ceremony, in which ten finalist teams in the $10 millionQualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE will be named. This is part of a 3.5-year competition in which teams develop a consumer-focused, mobile device capable of diagnosing and interpreting a set of 15 medical conditions and capturing five vital health metrics. The competition encourages the development of a device much like the medical Tricorder of Star Trek® fame, moving it from science fiction to science reality.
Several student-focused activities are also on the program for EMBC'14, including a paper competition, several exciting workshops and symposia, a special session from IEEE's Women in Engineering society, lunches with leaders in the biomedical engineering field, and a networking reception.
"This year's Annual Conference in Chicago is especially exciting for so many reasons. We are honored to welcome so many distinguished presenters and attendees from around the world," said EMBS President, Bruce Wheeler. "They reflect our Society's commitment to bringing together the very best and brightest minds in biomedical engineering, as we all work toward building better professionals and finding solutions through medicine and biology. This conference is a testament that EMBS continues to serve as a trusted source for emerging technology and healthcare resources."
A special panel discussion on Science Journalism will be conducted on Thursday, August 28 from 3-4 pm, and will be moderated by Colin Brenan, Editor in Chief of IEEE Pulse Magazine and Bill Burton, Interim Associate Chancellor for Public Affairs from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The focus of the discussion will be on how writers can best communicate their work to a non-technical audience.
A complete schedule of events and details on each of the planned sessions may be found at the conference website, http://embc.embs.org/2014.
